Sonic The Hedgehog #1 (Family Comic Friday)

Welcome to another edition of Family Comic Friday. This week is full of fun and games as we explore IDW Publishing's first issue ever starring the SEGA superhero, Sonic The Hedgehog. Then double your pleasure as all month long, we'll preview some of the all ages offerings for the upcoming Free Comic Book Day 2018! Our first preview this month is the Disney Princess Spotlight: Ariel from Joe Books Limited. So let's get started.

Sonic The Hedgehog #1
Written by Ian Flynn
Pencils by Tracy Yardley
Inks by Jim Amash and Bob Smith
Published by IDW.

Eggman has been defeated by Sonic. But his evil robotic creations remain. Mostly, their attacks have been random without their leader to coordinate the attacks. However, in the latest battle, there was something different. It was more organized, less chaotic. Has the evil scientist returned to terrorize Sonic and his friends?

This first issue was so very much like the video games, it was insane. The action was so fast paced with Tails assisting Sonic in the robot skirmish. The only thing missing was Sonic collecting golden rings in between bouts with Eggman's automaton creations.

This being the first issue of IDW's run on the Sonic franchise, I wasn't sure if this book was going to follow the extensive run Archie Comics compiled over the past 25-years. But from the first page that gave a brief overview of what has happened in the past year with Sonic and friends, it's safe to say that for the most part, the storyline hasn't been rebooted.

Ian Flynn's story was pretty good. I've only read the annual Sonic the Hedgehog books offered at Free Comic Book Day. So, I am not 100% certain how close to the Archie books is this version of Sonic. But I liked what I read, even if the jokes were a little corny.

Fans of Sonic are going to be in for a treat the whole month as IDW is releasing an all-new issue every week of April! You're going to want to save your quarters as this is a very good series with definite potential!

The art on the other hand is something I am very familiar with having played Sonic in the 90s. It's spot on to that of the characters in the game and numerous sequels. Tracy Yardley does a unbelievable job with dynamic inks by Jim Amash and Bob Smith.

Considering how long Archie had the license on Sonic, I am extremely surprised that the Sega icon found a new home at IDW. But I should not be surprised at the quality of the story and artwork as IDW has always killed it with their licensed projects! This one is no exception!

Worth Consuming!

Rating: 9 out of 10 stars.

Sonic The Hedgehog #1 is recommended for ages 8 and up!

The first issue debuted in stores and digital platforms April 4, 2018.
