Another international charity that involves culinary arts in which I am a huge fan of is the World Central Kitchen. It was founded in 2010 when world renowned chef Jose Andres in response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti.
Since it's founding, over 10 million meals have been provided in response to needed disaster relief. Those affected by Hurricane Harvey, the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake and the most recent Los Angeles wildfires have be provided hot meals from the World Central Kitchen.
Chef Andres' model is something that I am trying to emulate with my culinary arts students. We have a decent size of our school population experiencing food insecurity living in situations way below the standard American population poverty level. If a student comes to me needing food, I am going to feed them. And NO!- I am going to charge them.
My students have worked with several clubs at our school where we provide pre-cooked meals for students and their families for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday breaks. It's probably one of the most enjoyed and requested annual events we do that the students who produce and pack the meals want to keep on doing.
Believe me when I say it's my dream to turn our professional grade kitchen into a hub for World Central Kitchen or another similar charity. Business opportunities are great for high school students. But it's these type of generous giving that builds up a sense of community amongst my students.
If donating or even volunteering with the World Central Kitchen is something of interest to you, be sure to check out their website here.
Today's Advent song present is one of my all-time favorites from one of my favorite crooners: Nat King Cole. Since World Central Kitchen is a global charity with impeccable ratings and reviews, let's enjoy one of the most flawless Christmas carols ever made. From 1962, here's Cole with Joy to the World.
Enjoy!
