Our worldwide look at Santa’s takes us to Vanuatu. This South Pacific Island is a tropical paradise. But if you thought that a Vanuatu Christmas was nothing but sunny and warm… well, yeah, you’d be right. But Vanuatu also embraces dreams of colder weather and snow!
The most popular holiday decoration in Vanuatu is snow flakes. Towns are decked out with giant electrical snowflakes and strands of fairy lights. Snow scenes are replaced with the island nation’s white sands and snowmen are made of sand!
While Santa stills wears his traditional red fur suit in Vanuatu (man, must he be sweltering under there!) his sleigh is replaced with a catamaran decorated with bells, garland and a colorful sail. A midday swim is a tradition of Vanuatu children on Christmas Day. So along with tropical fruits and candy, the good children might receive a new swimsuit and other swimming gear from Santa.
As for the Christmas meal, turkey and ham is replaced with a selection of seafood. Cold cuts and salads, including pasta and potato varieties are also served. Bon bons are preferred holiday candy. But there’s baked treats too! And they take full advantage of the tropical fruits that are abundant on the island.
