The Portable Obituary: How the Famous, Rich, and Powerful Really Died by Michael Fargo

Writer Michael Largo crafts an over 300 page obituary column paying tribute to some of the most famous and infamous people to ever have lived. There's also quite a few people that have become forgotten over time, slipping through the cracks of pop culture and world history.

I thought that Largo's writing style was clear and concise. I learned a lot of interesting things from those lesser known celebrities to how medical terms involving the cause of death have changed over the years. I thought it was ironic how over 100 years ago, wealthy people were said to have died of exhaustion while the poor were categorized as dying of laziness; when in reality it was their living conditions and manner of life style, through excess or severe want that were the true culprits.

I thought that there were several notable figures absent from this book. Largo covers how a number of presidents die. However, there's no mention of JFK. Bobby Kennedy, Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., are also omitted from this work. Michael Largo has another book called Final Exits, about the various ways people have died. I want to read that book. Perhaps he focuses on assassinations in that book and thus didn't want to repeat himself...

Some of the facts the writer presents seemed contradictory to other books and documentaries I've seen over the years. Some of it could just be me remembering details differently. Though I must ask why Largo neglected to mention the resurrection of Jesus Christ in his listing on the founder of Christianity? Whether the author believed in Jesus as Savior or not, to not mention that many believe Christ rose from the dead was a serious oversight. Michael Largo wrote in other obituaries that further similar important religious figures are believed to have returned to life. Or never passed at all. Why not with a historical figure whose proclaimed resurrection is the founding tenet of one of the most important religions in human history?

The inside cover states that this book covers over 1,000 famous deaths. However, that's a deceptive blurb. I would say that Michael Largo covers probably 300 deaths in great detail and another 100 in 1-2 sentence factoids. The remaining majority are regulated to an index which tells of famous people such as Buddy Hackett and Wyatt Earp, with only a birth date, date of death, age at the time of death and cause. Imagine that, your whole life summed up in 3 short lines- just like a standard obituary..

Lastly, this book claims that Michael Largo has a humorous slant on the deaths of these notable figures. I understand that when dealing with such a morose subject, a hearty sense of humor is vital to prevent yourself from falling into a depression. However, I didn't really think the writer was all that funny. Informative? Absolutely! I devoured this book. It was an entertaining read. However, I felt like the attempts at humor were mostly bad puns and the equivalent of undertaker Dad jokes.

The Big Book of Weirdos

Technically this book was a re-read. Only I read this book years ago. Long before I started to keep a reading journal. The first time I encountered this book was when I was living in Durham NC, after having just got married. So at most, I read this book for the first time 25 years ago. The Big Book of Weirdos was one of the Durham Public Library Main Branch's few honest-to-God graphic novels placed in the graphic novel section of the library. In those days, if you went looking for graphic novels at the library, you were lucky if you could find something other than Garfield and Bloom County on the shelves.

This book written by Carl Posey examines the lives of famous people we collectively think of as rather strange, like Howard Hughes, depraved, such as Rasputin and Caligula, or rather terrifying, such as Ivan the Terrible. However, the majority of the book is made up of people who had underlying mental illness brought about the abuse of drugs and alcohol or those whose lives spiraled out of control because they lived in an age of primitive mental health practices or were surrounded by 'yes men'. Occasionally, there's a subject or two of which my grandmother would classify as 'just damn mean.'

This is the 6th book from Paradox Press that I now own. I love these treasuries of various subjects that are given the short story sequential art treatment by multiple talents. In this edition, Rick Geary, Batton Lash, Kieron Dwyer and Frank Quietly are among over 5 dozen talented artists who contributed. There's about 8 more books in the series out there that I hope to one day get my hands on.

Though I haven't read them all yet, The Big Book of Weirdos is one of more spicier books. Sex, murder, cheating, corruption are just some of the seven deadly sins being broken in this book. And that's not to mention the 10 Commandments, of which at least 13 are broken by the artists, politicians and socialites whose alternative lifestyles are examined inside.

Tis The Ugly Sweater Season! Advent 2021: Day 2

Celebrities and Christmas has gone hand-in-hand ever since the first Christmas. I mean Jesus was the first holiday celeb if you think of it. A lot of folks knew all about him and he was just a few minutes old.

So for day 2 of this Advent, I thought we'd look at celebs who did their best to rock the ugly Christmas sweater.

Jimmy Fallon's annual 12 Days of Ugly Christmas Sweaters has been an inspiration for my sharing of the horrid holiday jumpers. I don't watch The Tonight Show any more. But I've been keeping the tradition alive for the past couple of years with my wife. This year, I'm also sharing the fun with you!

GMA's Michael Strahan paying homage to holiday treats and sweets.

The Lord of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne celebrating in his own way.

King James sporting some Ugly Pajamas.

Here's Matt Damon rockin' an ugly sweater vest for the holidays.

Leave it to Gwen Stefani to turn an ugly sweater into a stylish pair of overalls.

After years of trolling Hugh Jackman, Wolverine got revenge on Ryan Reynolds by having Jake Gyllenhaal tell Deadpool that his holiday party required an Ugly Christmas Sweater. The Free Guy was the only one to wear a sweater and he got teased big time!

Things got meta for director Sophia Coppola who wore a 'Lost in Translation' inspired ugly sweater.

I wonder what Frosty is smoking in his pipe. I pretty much know what Snoop Dogg is smoking.

I think Katy Perry wins the award for the Ugliest Sweater of All-time!

As my Advent gift for you today, here's a look at the top 10 ugliest Christmas sweaters worn by celebs during the 2020 holiday season!  Note- this has no sound.

Enjoy!

1977: A Madman Turns 40: 2017- Day 182

It's time to go back to 1977. For today's look, I celebrate the 40th birthday of Liv Tyler.

Now you might think it's because I'm a fan or I think she's hot. But actually, there's a more sentimental reason I wanted to talk about this celebrity birthday.

Liv Tyler over the course of several films played the role of the elf Arwen in the Lord of the Rings movies. Her appearances happened around 2001-2005.

At this very same time, my wife and I suffered through several miscarriages. But we didn't name our children at first. It wasn't until 2004 when we both learned that naming your lost children helps with the healing process. Though my wife and I never got to see our babies, by God, we're parents and something about naming them helps make the grieving process real.

So you combine parents of rocker Steven Tyler and
model Bebe Buell and you get Liv Tyler.

If I remember correctly, by this time, we had miscarriage #4- our son Theodred. We decided on his name because there's a scene in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when Theoden, Theodred's father looks upon his grave says 'no parent should ever have to bury their own children.' Well, that phrase stuck with Jan and I and from almost that moment forward, child #4, that we were told was male, become Theodred or Theo for short.

Now we just needed 3 more names. We knew that our third child was a girl but we weren't 100% sure about our 'twins.' Now, I being a geek wanted to name them Luke and Leia. Well, being a huge Carrie Fisher fan, and once having a crush on her, my wife vetoed it. But man did I want Star Wars names for my kids. And boy did I have great one in mind. Yet, I had to sell my wife on it.

So after something brainstorming, I decided to be diplomatic: I named our daughter Arwen Michelle after both the LOTR character and my wife's middle name. Our first son I named Luke Allen after the celebrated Jedi Knight and Jan's grandfather. Now the doozy- son #2 would henceforth be known as Chewbacaa Mwor-wrowll-rowwll-rowll! And She Agreed!!! But I had to allow that we call him Chewie for short. (Note: Chewie's middle name is Wookiee for He Who Hunts Bounties.)

So, that's the story of why Liv Tyler deserved to be highlighted for today's A Madman Turns 40 showcase. Just so you know, we have a fifth child, another (confirmed daughter, whom Jan named Jazzmin (and we call Jazzy) after my love of Jazz music.

Well, that's my look at 1977 for today. I'll be back again soon to examine another aspect of my favorite year. Until then... Happy Birthday, Liv!
