All-New X-Men, Volume 6: The Ultimate Adventure

With their teachers summoned to Westchester to hear the reading of Professor X's will, the students of the New Xavier School are bored silly. Suddenly Cerebro goes wild having detected a new mutant just coming into her powers. But when some of the time displaced X-Men arrive, they spook the young mutant further and find themselves teleported away to various locations around the world. Separately, each member of the team are faced with strange happenings that lead them all to come to the same realization- this is not their earth!

Just when I think All-New X-Men can’t  get any better, Brian Michael Bendis scoops a handful of the mutants up and puts them into his Ultimate Universe! BAM- or should I say Bamf? Either way, it’s an instant classic.

The addition of the Miles Morales as a guide for the time and space displaced original X-Men was a brilliant idea. Spidey isn’t really known for being affiliated with the X-Men. But because Miles has crossed universes before, teaming with the Peter Parker Spider-Man of Earth-616 in the miniseries Spider-Men (2012), it makes perfect sense.

If you like stories that involve time travel- then All-New X-Men is the series you’ve been looking for. But if you also like for your time travelers to hop from alternate earth to alternate earth, you should watch Doctor Who. But this volume is the next best thing!!!  Featuring some of your favorite Ultimate Universe characters (Plus X-23!), dynamic art by Mahmud Asrar (Siege: Battlefield), as well as the aforementioned Bendis this truly is the Ultimate Adventure!

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Volume 22: Ultimatum

  Ultimate Spider-Man (2000-2009) #TP Vol 22
The original Ultimate Spider-man run comes to a close with some of the most thrilling and deadly adventures ever faced by Peter Parker. At first, everything seems to be going the wallcrawler's way. The police love him, the media isn't opposed to his efforts (for once), and he's finally found love with Mary Jane Watson. But you know that nothing ever stays perfect for Parker. Enter: Magneto's Ultimatum!

I've not read the Ultimatum miniseries yet. In fact, I don't think I own it. But I know that Magneto's beef with humanity finally reaches it's breaking point when the mutant madman unleashes an epic tsunami upon the Big Apple. Heroes will die, friendships tested, and only Spider-man can save the day!

It took forever for my local library to pick up this volume. I was so tempted to buy the issues that made up this book but I never could find them for a good price and I never gave up hope that my library would complete this collection. The good thing about having taken so long to read this after the 'War of the Symbiotes' is that basically none of those prior events affect this storyline, so I didn't feel lost or having to catch up on past events.

That being said, I think the odds of my library ever carrying Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Volume 1 (2009-2011), the next series to star the Parker Spidey (before Miles Morales assumed the role) is probably slim to none. So, add that to my wish list.

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man, Volume 1

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man (2014-2015) #TP Vol 1
Ok- I think the cover ruined Spoiler #2.

It's a new series and a new life for Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man. After the assault on Roxxon Corp. Miles has some new allies in the form of SHIELD agent Ultimate Spider-Woman, feisty Bombshell, and the mysterious Cloak & Dagger. He also has a new family dynamic as the teen has been named a ward of the state as it's assumed that his father died during a recent visit from Galactus.

In reality, Mr. Morales discovered that Miles is Spider-Man and blamed him for the death of his mother. It's been hinted that Miles' dad has a mysterious past and clearly having a son with super powers hit too close to home. But I have no idea when all of this happened nor which series it all takes place. It surely didn't happen in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man! Thankfully, I know of these events now because of flashbacks and conjecture from other characters. But if not for these teasers I would've been clueless to about 50% of what's going on in this series.

Along with these changes comes another villain from the Peter Parker Spider-Man's past. I don't want to spoil who it is, but it's a huge reveal. There's another big spoil in this book that involves a mysterious character and it very much could result in the end of Miles' claim to the mantle of Ultimate Spider-Man.

But before any of this takes place, you're invited to a very special gathering of friends and family. It's been 2 years since the death of Peter Parker and Aunt May and Gwen Stacy have thrown a party to reflect and honor the fallen superheroes life. With tons of cameos and surprises, it was a very fun read that made me missed the original Ultimate Spidey series. It had heart, humor, and tons of food. It was perhaps the best recent story I've read in quite a while.

The new series is just as good if not a teeny bit better than the first Miles Morales certain title. I still don't understand why Marvel needed to cancel that series and then immediately issue a new series (other than trying to cash in on those few readers who think an issue #1 will be worth big bucks one day.) The writing by Brian Michael Bendis is superior as always and the art was excellent. But like I mentioned earlier, if not for some very much needed flashbacks, I wouldn't have enjoyed this volume quite as much as I did.

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Volume 1

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up (2001-2002) #TP Vol 1 Variant A

This collection of 5 stories was written as a potential blueprint for expanding the Ultimate universe. At the time these issues were published, the only Ultimate title starred Spider-Man. So, expect to be a little confused, if like me, you’ve read a lot of Ultimate stuff before you come to this and the plots and background stories don't seem to match what you already know about Wolverine, Iron Man, and the Hulk. When those heroes appear in these stories it is their first ever Ultimate appearances. So, like many pilot episodes (on TV), these are really rough drafts of the exciting things yet to come.

The first story presents Wolverine as a metrosexual wuss than an unbridled animal. Sabretooth, in his bushy fur coat, wasn't any better.  I was really beginning to hate this series, when in issue 3, I realize that Hulk’s rampage in New York is what results in Banner being incarcerated at the beginning of Ultimates #1. Also, we come to a great 2-issue Iron Man tale by Mike and Laura Allred. Getting to experience anything done by the Allreds is always a nice unexpected surprise.

One thing about this book that ticked me off a little was that I've previously read both the Wolverine and the Iron Man team-ups before. Iron Man's story was reprinted in the Best of Spider-Man Volume 1. I can't recall where I encountered the Wolverine tale before off the top of my head, but I know I have. The Hulk story was the only one not reprinted (thus far or as much as I can tell.) Being reprinted in other formats and trades won't swear me off of getting volume 2 and 3 of this series. But since there is a chance I might have stumbled upon those issues in another format already, I will make sure I don't spend more than half of the cover price when I do come across them.

Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Team-up (Family Comic Friday)

It seems that Guardians of the Galaxy is the new flagship title of Marvel Comics…and the plan to do it paid off perfectly! Over the past year, this rag-tag bunch of heroes has been popping up on your favorite Saturday morning cartoons on Disney XD (although they air on Sunday) and now the Guardians are the kings of the box office! Rocket Racoon, lovable Groot, and the rest of the gang guest-starred throughout 2013-14 in episodes of Marvel Universe Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Marvel Universe: Ultimate Spider-man, and Marvel Universe: Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. All four of these episodes were later reprinted as photo-comics and then combined in digest form to co-incide with the release of the film.
A photo-comic is when photographs are used in place of drawn or painted art to show the visual action of a comic. The images might be computer enhanced to add color or photoshopped effects. Then the standard word bubble is layered over the image if commucation is expressed for the represented scene. I normally like photo-comics (or picto-comics) but I’ve not been a fan of the Marvel Universe books because they are essentially the entire episode that I’ve already seen on TV. I perfer DC’s method which is when they publish a comic book for one of their cartoons, the book’s premise and art is all-new! But I made an exception this time.
For some reason my DVR doesn’t like the Guardians and I missed both the Avengers episode and the Agents of SMASH one too! So, I eagerly checked this book out from my local library because I missed them on TV the first go round. Plus, I’ve never read the first appearance of Rocket Raccoon, which appeared in Incredible Hulk #271 and is reprinted at the end of this book.
When I first went to the Orange County (NC) public library in 2001, I had just moved to the town a couple of days prior and I did like I also do, go to section 271.94 in the non-fiction section. There I found 2 5-foot long shelves of ‘comics.’ By that, I mean there was a Superman graphic novel, 3 Ultimate Spider-man volumes (none in order), something called Naurato, and a bunch of Bloom County and Garfield books. I wasn’t as gaga in comics as I am now, but I knew to be able to read more graphic novels for free I was going to have to work with my librarians.
I checked out everything that had in that section over a period of months. By that point, a librian noticed that I always checked out the graphic novels and wanted to know what I liked and didn’t like in their selection. I was able to work with her, suggested new titles, and doing some field research of my own and find new stuff for other patrons. Sometimes, I’d ever get first dibs on a special title that had newly arrived.
Now, 11-years later, the graphic novels have their own section of 2 full 6-teired shelves, as well as a special shelf in the new arrivals area. Not only that but there is now a graphic novel section for kids. (Their used to be a teen section but it was merged with the adult graphic novels.)
Libraries have really been getting into the action in the past 5 years- thanks mostly to the popularity of the slew of TV shows and movies about super heroes. I’ve been to several comic conventions across North Carolina in which public libraries are hosting booths to let guests know that they too have graphic novel sections. Manga is also becoming a blossoming member of library shelves as well as DVDs starring Iron Man, Thor, and Superman.
My library has a comic book club that meets weekly and I saw a flyer that the Durham County main branch has 2 different graphic novel clubs meeting on 2 separate days weekly as well! Also, there have been screenings of Marvel movies at my library and branches in Durham and Chapel Hill.
I mention all of this because readers might not be aware of much importance has been place on graphic novels and comics recently at the local library. The library is a vital tool for me because I couldn’t afford to read all of the comics I do on this blog without their help and assistance. So, be sure to check your library to see if they have a graphic novel section. And if they don’t or it’s paltry like mines was that first time I inspected it, they see a librian. They’ll be glad to assist you. You might even get lucky like I did and find and awesome one who likes graphic novels too and asks you for wish lists! Hey, they might even get filled.
The books reprinted in this collection are: MARVEL UNIVERSE AVENGERS EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES 18, MARVEL UNIVERSE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN 22, MARVEL UNIVERSE HULK: AGENTS OF S.M.A.S.H. 4, INCREDIBLE HULK (1968) 271
In the Avengers, we’re introduced to a Michael Korvac, a man who may have been abducted by an alien force and turned into a living bomb. The Guardians of the Galaxy are summoned to the Avengers mansion where Korvac is recovering and all heck breaks loose. Then in Ultimate Spider-man, Spidey learns that his teammate Nova is more than just a goof-ball with cosmic powers when Rocket Raccoon summons him to outer space to defeat the Korvac menace which has returned. Lastly, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH team-up with Rocket to free the Guardians from the clutches of the Collector before the entire solar system are destroyed by Kree and Skrull forces. That awesome story was a Christmas story to boot! That means thanks to my stupid DVR last year; I missed a super hero Christmas special! GRRR!
Anyway, speaking of holidays, next week I’ll dive in to the world of Halloween Comics. They’re not just for kids and are down-right spooky. So, I’ll let you in one what is family friendly and what should wait until you’re older.

Marvel Fanfare #47

Marvel Fanfare (1982-1992) #47

The Hulk returns from a sojourn in space and hits the Big Apple with a worse than usual rampage. Nick Fury and SHIELD are called in to save the day, but when Fury is left incapacitated, it’s left to the inept helicarrier Quartermaster to become the new head of SHIELD.

Added to the mix is Spidey, who discovers that an alien parasite has attached to Hulk and is responsible for the madness. Fantastic scenes of carnage and heroics abound for 32 pages.

What made this issue an even bigger thrill is that this story was recently the subject of an Ultimate Spider-man episode. It’s one of my favorite episodes of the series and it was neat to read that tale’s inspiration.

Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1

Like Batman: Brave and the Bold, Ultimate Spider-Man started out very childish and then finally found it’s footing as an all-ages series that included imagination and sheer buffoonery with extremely popular story lines and crisp, clean art.

This collection of issues celebrates the Disney XD series. It not only captures the essence of that awesome series, it tries really hard to make the reader feel like they are actually watching an episode on TV. With extra features such as Marvel Mash-Ups (old Marvel comics are rewritten with goofy dialogue) and entries from Nick Fury’s Secret Files, the only thing missing is a remote and a large bowl of cereal.

A great read that Marvelites of all ages will love.

Ultimate Spider-Man, Vol. 19: Death of a Goblin

WORTH CONSUMING!

Consumed in less than 18 hours!

Ultimate Spider-man is one of the best series ever- current or past. And the main reason is the writer- Brian M. Bendis.

His Spidey is NOT a remake like what Van Zant tried to do with Psycho. Not at all. US is a re-crafting.

For those of you who hate that One More Day happened- don’t abandon the SS PeterParker- come over to the Ultimate side of the Force.

This volume does have a new artist for the 1st ever. It’s not bad art- but for someone who’s gone 18 straight volumes with a different artist, the 1st couple of chapters mean there’s an adjustment period. But by the explosive action at books end- the adjustment is gone and you’re left yearning for volume 20 to hurry up and get printed.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Ultimate Collection, Vol. 3

WORTH CONSUMING!

Not the best Ultimate Spiderman book (which BTW covers the 5th and 6th trade paperback version of USM)- but as I have said recently on other reviews (and I know I say it a lot), it’s far better than the tripe that the House of Ideas is peddling right now. This volume is more darker, with Spidey dealing with an impersonator and his dark side in the guise of Venom. Plus, there’s less Mary Jane in this volume and she’s the heart and soul of USM. It’s more gory too, I was a bit unsettled by it and actually had to switch to a DC title in order to purge myself. Plus there’s a flashback to Spider-man fighting the Ultimate Lizard, and I really do not remember that sequence.

USM: Volume 3 does get a Worth Consuming and 4 stars, but needs to go back to its earlier Ultimate formula if it wants to regain that last star.

"Ultimate Spider-man: Volume 3 Double Trouble"

WORTH CONSUMING!

Amazing, Spectacular, Neighborhood friendly!

The Ultimate universe keeps getting better and better.

Meet their version of Dr. Octopus, be introduced to S.H.E.I.L.D., and meet a certain blondie, who in all senses of the word, SHOULD BE “DEAD!”
Totally worth consuming!!!
