About one year ago exactly, I started reading Vertigo's latest re-launch of the classic DC horror anthology series, The House of Mystery. That classic title started in the mid-50s and was a mild hit. But, in the late 60s, the Comics Code Authority lessened it's rules against horror titles and the series was retooled after those late night horror movie shows hosting by ghoulish beings who'd act out small skits during commercial breaks and would introduce viewers to the film they were about to partake. The series new host was Cain and a couple of years later, his brother Abel became the owner of a house of his own and began hosting the series House of Secrets.
Vertigo's HOM was the second and more successful of the title's re-launchings with the second volume involving Elvira, Mistress of the Night, hosting up some zany B-grade frights in the mid-80s.
This new series involved one Fig Keele, a college student whose life is in shambles. One day, Fig finds herself the new owner of the House of Mystery and the manager to the House's new saloon. The rules of the bar are as follows:
"First Drink is on the house. To drink for another day, one must tell a tale to the patrons of the bar."
While most of Fig's story involves trying to get back home, the series is once again an anthology as employees and patrons of the house spin spooky tales that often parallel the action of the main protagonist.
So, join me this week as I finish off all 8 volumes of Vertigo's The House of Mystery, as I start gearing my readings to reflect the upcoming festivities of autumn and All Hallows Eve.
