They Made a Christmas Album?- Advent 2018- Day 6

Today's featured artist is proof that despite how popular something is, it doesn't need to marketed to death. Also, just because it's popular on TV, that does not mean it will translate well in song. I'm talking about the dudes from Duck Dynasty.

A huge hit for A&E, Duck Dynasty is a reality series about a family who made a killing well, um, killing ducks. Patriarch Phil Robertson became a very wealthy man by creating a duck call. It was his son Willie who saw potential in making the product a nationwide phenomenon and trademarked the name Duck Commander.

From 2012-2017, the Robertson family dominated everything from books to fashion, movies, and eventually what I am about to share with you today- a Christmas record.

The plus side for this song, Daddy Looked A Lot Like Santa, was that it was written by a real and talented country singer, Buck Owens (Hee-Haw) along with Don Rich. A hit in 1965, the song was covered by a number of country artists and eventually the Duck Dynasty people. If they only did the one song, it might be a little forgivable. But somebody thought it would be a great idea to have the entire family do an entire album!

Featuring guest stars such as George Strait and Allison Krauss, the Robertson family should have left things to the professionals. What's completely insane about Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas, is that the 2013 album was a critical and commercial success. Duck the Halls sold 69,000 units in it's first week and was number one of the country charts for two weeks!

But that's the essence of this year's theme. What might be a holiday stinker for one listener might be a new Christmas tradition for another. No matter how you debate the quality of this song, there's no denying that the Duck Dynasty people are not exactly what you would think as having a Christmas record, but they did!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Daddy Looked A Lot Like Santa by the Duck Dynasty boys!
