This issue is towards the end of Weird War Tales classic original series run. At this point and time the series is devoted to established characters as opposed to an anthology of strange stories involving war torn lands and such. In this issue, a feature length tale is devoted to the Creature Commandos, comprised of a werewolf, a vampire, a Frankenstein monster of sorts, and later, a Medusa-like character whose also a doctor.
None of these characters are actually Dracula, or the Boris Karloff Frank. Instead they are a group of test subjects who are granted the abilities and appearance of famous monsters of legend in order to conduct clandestine missions and scare the bejesus out of superstitious Nazis.
In this issue, the Commandos must rescue a noted professor of physics from a concentration camp in the middle of Nazi Germany! Posing as a traveling circus, the Creature Commandos come across famed real-life monsters such as Goebbels and even Hitler! (you can see for yourself below!)
It makes for a great Halloween themed read, but it's not really scary. Some of the initial parts of the story that introduces the uninitiated reader to the cast of characters is superficial and I'm not sure why I feel it's un-pc for a 1982 book about a 1944 troupe of monsters should be lead by a xenophobe commanding officer, but I do.
I can see why the Commandos are featured in Weird War Tales, but why didn't they ever get their own title is what I want to know! I hope to come across more stuff starring them sometime soon in the near future.
Worth Consuming.
