This is one of the earlier Weird War Tales to feature the Creature Commandos. It doesn't even have Dr. Medusa yet!
In this tale, the Commandos are sent to the Nazi stronghold of... up-state New York??? It appears that the Nazis have colonized a small New England town and are publishing a Fascist newspaper in hopes of lowering American morale for the war effort abroad. It's a pretty interesting concept and the Commandos purpose of being formed in order to strike fear in the hearts of Nazi sympathizers is put to the ultimate test here.
The shear destruction of the Commandos on that small community is the truly frightening aspect of this story.
It gets a little preachy in the end. It's almost makes you feeling sorry for the Nazis who get creamed in this book. I'm not sure if that's a sign of a good storyteller or if the writer actually missed the point of the fascists are bad no matter what. Who wrote this, Alan Alda?
I liked a large portion of this issue. But like I said the ending was questionable and outlandish. I wasn't impressed with how it ended and yet the book did leave me thinking- "Is it ever OK to feel sorry for the bad guy, no matter how destructive they really are?" As someone who is married to a half-Jewish woman, I'd have to say no- the Nazis of World War II killed millions of Jews, some of which were direct ancestors of my wife's grandparents.
But, man does this issue open up a philosophical can of worms.
Worth Consuming.
