WORTH CONSUMING!
I can’t believe that it took me 3
volumes (Have yet to find volumes 1-2) to realize that A) John Byrne does not
do every issue collected in these “Man of Steel” sets, B)That the issues are
not always in order, and C) Byrne does a much better job in the Superman ret-con
that Wolfman and Ordway.
Also, you can tell who’s issues you
are reading as Byrne Superman is less muscular and less godlike, and the Wolfman?
Ordway Superman is more like a Barbie doll, as his head is drawn way too small
for the body.
But in terms a pathos, the best
stories are not Byrne’s. The W/O stories are fully crafted and have a linear
feel to them. Byrne’s tries to much to make Superman a love story than about a
superhero. Now, when it comes to the personal, Byrne is the best, but it’s like
going to a Monster movie and only to have the villain appear for 10 minutes and
most of that is in shadows and during the last 4 minutes of the movie.
Also, for those who read this volume
: What happened to Lana Lang. She gets kidnapped by a flying happy meal in the
first chapter and never appears, except in a dream sequence- and I do not think
that is the answer to her disappearance.
It could be in Volume 6, but, man
that’s a long time to wait for a dangling plotline. Still, Classic 80’s
Superman, with great dialog, better Luthor, and some cool crossovers. Worth
Consuming!!!
