Well, it took 3
issues, but the powers that be decided to finally clear up a bit of confusion
about ‘Big Town,’ It’s not a “what if” story, it doesn’t take place in an
alternate reality like the Universe X series do and it’s not Ultimate Marvel.
No, this story actually takes place in the same universe that Stan Lee and Jack
Kirby started in the 1960s. It just takes place a little bit into the future.
Right now during my
lunch breaks, I am reading the Iron Metropolitan storyline from the Marvel NOW!
Iron Man series. In that book, Tony Stark is trying to turn a the Mandarin’s
abandoned city-state into a utopia. Right now, the city is beyond hope and has
been given up by the Chinese government and the United Nations. But in order to
make sure he doesn’t screw up, Stark keeps running scenarios of future events.
Often these ‘war games’ end with the destruction of planet earth.
Apparently, the Tony in
this mini-series hasn’t run such scenarios as Big Town’s reactor in going
critical thanks to the infestation of Ultron during an attack from the Cabal. Speaking
of Cabals, that’s the name of the baddies led by Red Skull in the Marvel’s
Avengers cartoon series on Disney XD. It’s really strange how a hypothetical work
from 15 years ago is influencing some of Marvel’s current storylines.
Seeing how threads
from a story told about the future is coming to past in the comics I read now
is pretty eerie. But I like it! It’s actually given me a slightly higher
opinion of this miniseries than when I finished it a few days ago (I’m so
behind on reviews. I still have stuff from last month to add to my reading
journal.)
If you are reading any
of the Marvel NOW! books starring Tony Stark, the Avengers, of the Fantastic
Four, then you need to stop, go to your local comics shop or online and buy
this series. You will thank me for it!
Worth Consuming.
